Boosting Family Support: What You Need to Know About the IRD's Family Boost

At The Fairy Godmothers Group (TFG), we're all about empowering not just ECE centers but also the families in our communities. A key way families can receive extra support is through the Family Boost, a new government initiative introduced by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD). This program helps ease the financial pressure of early childhood education and care for families, providing essential support for those with children under the age of three.

What is Family Boost?

Family Boost is designed to give parents and caregivers financial assistance with the cost of early childhood education. The program is targeted at lower and middle-income families, providing up to $3,394 a year (around $65 a week) to help with the cost of childcare.

This financial boost ensures that parents can balance work and family life with less strain, giving children the early learning opportunities they need to thrive. Whether you're currently paying for childcare or planning for the future, Family Boost could be a game-changer for your family’s budget.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for Family Boost, you need to meet certain criteria. You must:

  • Have a child under the age of three enrolled in licensed early childhood education.

  • Have a combined family income under $118,000 per year.

For families meeting these requirements, Family Boost provides direct financial relief, allowing more flexibility and freedom to focus on work or personal goals while knowing your child is in good hands.

How Do You Apply?

Applying for Family Boost is simple! You can find all the necessary details and apply directly online through the IRDFamily Boost website. The site offers a comprehensive overview of eligibility criteria, how the payments work, and how to apply.

It’s important to keep your income and personal details up to date with IRD to ensure you receive the correct amount. You can also use the Family Boost calculator on the IRD website to estimate how much support you might receive.

Why It Matters

We know how challenging it can be to juggle work and childcare costs. The Family Boost is a fantastic initiative that takes some of the pressure off, allowing you to focus on what really matters—your family and your child’s development. At TFG, we’re here to support you with this information because we believe that stronger families lead to stronger communities.

Please help me supporting this lovely family. Thank you.

Kia ora Whānau!

We are supporting a friend and her family in her quest to be around for her family & live after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

In 2018 Fleur received the crushing diagnosis of having Stage 3 Rectal Cancer which was heartbreaking news. She underwent 25 brutal rounds of pelvic radiation and chemotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the cancer growth, and then another round of ‘clean-up chemo’ to eliminate any extra circulating tumour cells.

By the end of 2019 it looked promising that Fleur was on track to beat cancer. Unfortunately, a couple of months later she received the devastating news that the cancer had metastasized and was now Stage 4. Fleur was given the shocking terminal diagnosis of less than a year to live unless she committed to pay for the non-funded immunotherapy cancer treatment ‘Cetuximab’ at a cost of $70,000 annually. Without hesitation Fleur cashed in her Kiwisaver, Life Insurance and savings and has now privately paid over $200k.

However Fleur’s health has recently taken another turn and the disease has now advanced into her lungs. The oncology team have advised she must now immediately start ANOTHER non-funded immunotherapy cancer drug called Bevacizumab at another huge cost of $75,000 per cycle which they are confident she will respond to.

We now need your help to fund this next cycle of treatment as the family has been left exhausted both financially and psychologically. Fleur has given so much to her community, friends and family, and still has a huge amount of fight left in her, and it’s imperative that she has access to this treatment.

We have organised a 24hr live stream to help fundraise for her treatment.

We have amazing auctions & raffles on the website, including
